Biography

In 2014 Lyn Hay officially joins the Syba Academy team as the Head of Professional Learning. Her role involves the development of our professional learning program, hosting face-to-face seminars and workshops, presenting at conferences, designing and teaching online extension courses, and facilitating our CLiP it! and PLP programs.

Lyn comes to the Academy with 20 years of working as a lecturer in the School of Information Studies and Flexible Learning Institute Fellow at Charles Sturt University where she has trained 1000s of teachers, teacher librarians, librarians and information technologists at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Lyn’s research interests are multi-faceted and interdisciplinary, including the impact of school libraries on student learning, TLs as evidence-based practitioners, inquiry learning within a Web 2.0 world, iCentres as learning hubs in schools, digital citizenship and information policy issues, principal-TL partnerships, and education informatics.

Lyn has written a number of journal articles, book chapters and papers, and has presented at numerous conferences both nationally and internationally. She is also the recipient of a number of professional awards including:

A four-week facilitator led online extension course with Lyn Hay.

This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed by teachers, teacher librarians, learning technology coordinators and principals who have completed Syba Academy’s Digital Citizenship: Core Concepts & Practice (SYBDCC002) course.

This advanced course assists participants in identifying digital tools and apps to support the teaching of digital citizenship content and skill outcomes across the curriculum, and provides participants with knowledge and skills to lead the development of a whole school digital citizenship policy, as well as the design, implementation and evaluation of a digital citizenship program with their school.

School teams of 2-5 participants are encouraged to enrol as their school’s Digital Citizenship Working Party. This can lead to a school designing and implementing school-based digital citizenship policies and programs to specifically address their community’s needs.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate digital tools and apps based on functionality to support the teaching of digital citizenship knowledge and skill-based outcomes within learning areas of Australian Curriculum;;

  • Model digital citizenship skills to teachers, students, and parents;

  • Undertake an audit existing school-based policy documents to identify aspects of digital citizenship that are addressed, and where there are gaps in school policy;

  • Develop a community awareness program to support discussions about digital citizenship issues in their school with students, teachers and parents; and

  • Lead a school-based policy development process to assist their school in developing policy and programs that effectively integrates digital citizenship across the curriculum.;

The course syllabus consists of three modules:

    A. Digital citizenship and tech tools

    B. Developing a digital citizenship program

    C. C. Leading digital citizenship policy and practice in your school


Study time for this course

This course involves a minimum of 15 hours across a 4 week period, with an expectation that approximately 3.5 hours of study time is invested to complete coursework, and online and in-school learning tasks for the first 3 weeks of the course, followed by 3.5 hours in the final week to compile documentation for assessment.

Earning endorsed credit for this course

Upon completion of this course, participants will be eligible for 15 hours of NSW BOSTES/QTC endorsed credit of professional learning.

For your convenience this course is aligned to AITSL National Standards for Teachers and meets the requirements for Teacher identified Professional Learning in the following states as outlined below:

  • Victorian Institute of Teaching’s Professional Development (PD) for teacher registration and renewal purposes,
  • Teacher Registration Board of WA Professional Development (PD) for teacher registration and renewal purposes,
  • Teacher Registration Board of SA Professional Development (PD) for teacher registration and renewal purposes,
  • Teacher Quality Institute ACT(TQI) teacher identified Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for registered teachers
  • Queensland College of Teachers’ (QCT) teacher identified Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for registered teachers

Prerequisite studies

To undertake this course (SYBDCC003), participants must have already completed the prerequisite course, Digital Citizenship: Core Concepts & Practice (SYBDCC002).

Class sizes will be capped at 30 to ensure individual instruction.

Completing the online extension course Digital Citizenship: Advanced Skills and Leadership will contribute 15 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing 2.6.2, 3.3.2, 3.4.2, 3.7.2, 4.4.2, 4.5.2, 6.2.2, 7.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Completing the online extension course Digital Citizenship: Advanced Skills and Leadership will contribute 5 hours of TQI ACT Registered PD addressing 2.6, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 4.4, 4.5, 6.3, 7.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at Graduate, Proficient. Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher level.
